ISA History: The Early Days

The International Student Association (ISA) was founded in October 1969. Its first chief student leader was Enrique Baromas of Mexico. It was originally called the International Association, and was created to provide a voice for Aggies from around the world and introduce them to the Aggie culture. Over the years, ISA has evolved to be considered the umbrella organization for international student organizations on campus.

In November 1970, the constitution was reviewed and it was decided to formally change the name of the organization from “International Association” to “International Student Association”. This was done in order to better clarify the goals of the organization. Moreover, in the 1970s, ISA held a variety of social and cultural activities such as parties, dances, films, lectures, debates, sporting events, and intramural games.

Today ISA is considered the most diverse organization on campus, considering it represents almost 6,000 international students from more than 100 different countries. ISA not only provides cultural awareness programs, but also promotes global leadership development opportunities for its members. It also exists to represent and advocate for international students and make them feel welcomed at Texas A&M.

DIWALI-2019

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is celebrated on the darkest new moon night of the luni-solar calendar. Literally translated as “a row of lamps” from Sanskrit, the celebration is symbolic of the victory of light over darkness, virtue over evil, and enlightenment over ignorance. Diwali marks the peak of a five-day celebration, preceded by Dhanteras and Lakshmi Puja, the embodiment of wealth, good fortune and prosperity, and succeeded by Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj, that celebrates the bond between partners, siblings, and new family members with food and sweets. So save the date (October 27th), put on your best Indian outfits, and come celebrate Diwali with the Hindu Society of Brazos Valley and Indian Graduate Students Association at Shri Omkarnath Temple, Navasota TX, 77847. Events will start at 5-30 pm at the temple, and end with an exciting firework show at 10 pm. IGSA will arrange transportation for TAMU students from College Station to the temple. Tickets will be released soon.
